The Major is 300+ Strong
As we approach our 50th year anniversary, the child development program is stronger than ever with more than 300 students in the major and 150 students in the minor. With a developmental focus on prenatal though emerging adulthood, family development, and agencies that serve children and families, we moved from an interdisciplinary program to a standalone department in 2012. We have maintained our strong internship component with majors completing more than 250 hours of internship-based experiences across three courses. We appreciate your support of our program as we improve the lives of children and families together.
Observation In The Child Development Lab
Teachers and students observing a preschool classroom using computers and double mirrors.
Our partnership with the Associated Students to provide a high quality program for observation of young children and an early childhood practicum is going strong. As of the spring 2018 semester, we now have full observation capacity in all four classrooms via two observation rooms. The Associated Students Child Development Laboratory (ASCDL) serves infants in the Willow Room that also serves as an Early Head Start site, toddlers in the Maple Room, young preschoolers in the Lilac Room, and preschoolers in the Modoc-based Magnolia Room.
Congratulations to the ASCDL for attaining  National Accreditationthe only facility within a 50 mile radius with this designation! This is a strong asset for our majors who are observing, completing internships, and working in this setting.

Meet Our Newest CHLD Faculty
Shrija Dirghangi
Our newest faculty member, Shrija Dirghangi, joined us in the Fall of 2016. She completed her PhD in developmental psychology at Florida Atlantic University in the summer of 2016, complementing her MA in clinical psychology from the University of Mumbai, India. Her research explores methods for supporting healthy children, adolescents, and family mental outcomes by building resilience and shaping stronger relationship contexts. Over the course of her first year and a half at Chico State, she has initiated two new community-based projects, Bringing Baby Home and Girls Circle. Read more about Professor Dirghangi and her work on our website.

Internship Updates
Our recently revised internship program now features a three-step experience coordinated by our outstanding faculty member, Valerie Singleton. This experience begins with CHLD 282, “Developmentally Appropriate for Curriculum for Children,” followed by CHLD 392, “Child Development Practicum: Advanced,” and concluding with CHLD 492, “Child Development Practice.” The initial and final internships are completed in community settings representing a range of situations with children from prenatal through emerging adulthood, their families, and agencies that serve them. The middle internship is completed within the ASCDL or Innovative Preschool. This coordinated and carefully planned internship series is faculty coordinated and individualized for each student, resulting in a comprehensive experience for students as they prepare for future work with children and families.
